It's not too late to save a heart

Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death in Australia. Every 12 minutes, someone loses a loved one. And the reality is that someone you know and love is likely to have disease at some point in their life.

But at the Baker Institute, we’re working to change that. Our research focuses on preventing heart attacks and cardiac arrests before they happen, as well as improving outcomes for those affected through cutting-edge diagnosis and treatment.

Together, we can stop heart attacks from taking more lives — every donation brings us closer to a cure for heart disease.

You can save a heart today.

Thank you for your generous donation.

Justine's story: My daughter found me unresponsive and my son spent seven minutes giving me CPR

Justine's story: My daughter found me unresponsive and my son spent seven minutes giving me CPR

It was my son Kyan’s 16th birthday, and if my daughter Hudsyn hadn’t come into my room to ask me about his birthday lunch and found me unresponsive on the floor, I wouldn’t be here today.

Kyan was alerted by his little sister’s screams. He raced in after her, called 000 and tried to focus, as the operator talked him through performing CPR. As soon as the compressions stopped, so did my pulse.

After what must have felt like an eternity for my terrified children, the paramedics arrived.

By the time my pulse started stabilising, I’d technically been dead for 86 minutes.

Now, as an ambassador for heart health, I’ve chosen to support the incredible work of the Baker Institute. With continued research, I believe we’ll soon see improved testing that can pick up on the warning signs and reduce so many preventable tragedies.

Today, I urge you to support the Baker Institute with me. Together, we can stop heart disease and save lives.

$50 will help fund postgraduate students to undertake groundbreaking studies through our research programs.

$100 will help cover the cost of the cutting-edge technology and equipment for our heart research labs and clinics.

$500 will help train clinicians in the field on new diagnostic and screening tools for measuring heart health.

The research you fund today, could save the life of someone you love in the future.

Heart disease takes the life of 1 in 3 Australians, and is the second leading cause of death of women in Australia. Stories like Justine's, continue to inspire my research program. The hidden risk factors for heart disease, like genetic predisposition and silent inflammation, remain under-detected, under-treated and under-recognised, especially in women.

To save the lives of more loved ones, maybe even one of your own — we need your help to fund our research.

The work we are doing is incredibly promising, but we can’t do it without you. Our supporters directly fund groundbreaking research and clinical trials that will change the way we understand and treat heart disease.

Your contribution today will help bring these breakthroughs from bench to bedside, improving the outcomes for tens of thousands of loved ones; family members, friends and future generations living with the unseen risk of heart attack and cardiac arrest.

Heart disease takes a life every 12 minutes. It doesn’t have to. Your gift today will bring us closer to ending early deaths from heart disease.

My children almost lost their mother

Samantha
Heart Attack Survivor

Teacher and mum of three Samantha never considered the possibility that a heart attack could leave her boys without a mother.

As a woman in her 40s who exercised regularly and ate a balanced diet, she didn’t present as someone at high risk of heart attack. She didn’t smoke, rarely drank and had no family history of heart disease.

Sam’s situation is not unique. Women in particular are less likely to consider themselves at risk, as culturally, heart attack is strongly associated with men. And yet, over 20 women die of cardiovascular disease every day.

The solution is in front of you.

The solution is in front of you

Associate Professor Howden’s program of research seeks to enhance the prevention and treatment of cardiometabolic disease through developing innovative multidisciplinary approaches, with a particular focus on “exercise as medicine.”

She has recently launched a research project, collaborating with postgraduate students on the role of physical activity in preventing cardiovascular disease in women.

This research could lead to earlier and more effective intervention for women who, through lifestyle or genetic factors are more susceptible to heart disease.

Your support will assist researchers like Dr Donner and Associate Professor Howden to develop new strategies to protect those most at risk of early death and lifelong complications due to heart disease.

Where your funds go

Where your funds go

Throughout the years, the support of donors like you has paved the way for scientists to develop important treatments for heart disease, such as open heart surgery, which have saved millions of lives.

Donor support also enabled our researchers to identify and distinguish the two different types of diabetes (type 1 and type 2), a discovery that revolutionised the treatment and management of this chronic condition.

With limited funding from the government available, generous supporters like you enable the Institute to continue purchasing state-of-the-art equipment, supporting leading and emerging scientists and developing cutting-edge research projects. Our work would not be possible without you. Your support of research is nothing short of lifesaving.

Thank you!

Over the years, donor support has been crucial to helping advance our understanding of heart health, and pave the way towards a future free from heart disease.

Thanks to the support of generous people like you, the Baker Institute is able to provide researchers like Dr Daniel Donner and Associate Professor Erin Howden, with the state-of-the-art facilities and cutting-edge equipment they need to conduct their research — helping accelerate the development of lifesaving new treatments and get them to the bedside of patients faster.

Simply put, our work wouldn’t be possible without people like you. This tax time, your support of research can truly help save hearts and lives.

Thank you!
