Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death in Australia. Every 12 minutes, someone loses a loved one. And the reality is that someone you know and love is likely to have disease at some point in their life.
But at the Baker Institute, we’re working to change that. Our research focuses on preventing heart attacks and cardiac arrests before they happen, as well as improving outcomes for those affected through cutting-edge diagnosis and treatment.
Together, we can stop heart attacks from taking more lives — every donation brings us closer to a cure for heart disease.
You can save a heart today.
It was my son Kyan’s 16th birthday, and if my daughter Hudsyn hadn’t come into my room to ask me about his birthday lunch and found me unresponsive on the floor, I wouldn’t be here today.
Kyan was alerted by his little sister’s screams. He raced in after her, called 000 and tried to focus, as the operator talked him through performing CPR. As soon as the compressions stopped, so did my pulse.
After what must have felt like an eternity for my terrified children, the paramedics arrived.
By the time my pulse started stabilising, I’d technically been dead for 86 minutes.
Now, as an ambassador for heart health, I’ve chosen to support the incredible work of the Baker Institute. With continued research, I believe we’ll soon see improved testing that can pick up on the warning signs and reduce so many preventable tragedies.
Today, I urge you to support the Baker Institute with me. Together, we can stop heart disease and save lives.
$50 will help fund postgraduate students to undertake groundbreaking studies through our research programs.
$100 will help cover the cost of the cutting-edge technology and equipment for our heart research labs and clinics.
$500 will help train clinicians in the field on new diagnostic and screening tools for measuring heart health.
Heart disease takes the life of 1 in 3 Australians, and is the second leading cause of death of women in Australia. Stories like Justine's, continue to inspire my research program. The hidden risk factors for heart disease, like genetic predisposition and silent inflammation, remain under-detected, under-treated and under-recognised, especially in women.
To save the lives of more loved ones, maybe even one of your own — we need your help to fund our research.
The work we are doing is incredibly promising, but we can’t do it without you. Our supporters directly fund groundbreaking research and clinical trials that will change the way we understand and treat heart disease.
Your contribution today will help bring these breakthroughs from bench to bedside, improving the outcomes for tens of thousands of loved ones; family members, friends and future generations living with the unseen risk of heart attack and cardiac arrest.

deaths from heart disease.
Associate Professor Howden’s program of research seeks to enhance the prevention and treatment of cardiometabolic disease through developing innovative multidisciplinary approaches, with a particular focus on “exercise as medicine.”
She has recently launched a research project, collaborating with postgraduate students on the role of physical activity in preventing cardiovascular disease in women.
This research could lead to earlier and more effective intervention for women who, through lifestyle or genetic factors are more susceptible to heart disease.
Your support will assist researchers like Dr Donner and Associate Professor Howden to develop new strategies to protect those most at risk of early death and lifelong complications due to heart disease.
